Camel Statue

"In commemoration of the arrival of the inaugural passenger train into Alice Springs on the Tarcoola-Alice Springs railway 9th October 1980"

(The date refers to the current standard-gauge line.)

Before the first railway line to Alice Springs was constructed in 1929, camels were used to transport supplies into Alice Springs (and other remote parts of Australia). The camels were eventually set free and their descendants continue to roam the outback today.
