Releasing the balloons at 12:51pm during a short memorial service to those who were lost in the 2011 earthquake. This was held as part of the finish-line activities of the Run To Remember.
The run takes participants over a scenic 12km hill course with nice views across the city and Canterbury Plains to the Southern Alps.
The red and black colours are significant as they are the colours of our province of Canterbury.
