Petrified Forest

The Catlins Coastline runs between Invercargill and Balclutha, right down in the southeastern corner of the South Island of New Zealand. It contains many short (and not-so-short) walks, ranging from minutes to hours, and some very nice scenery.

It's worth taking at least two days to travel this stretch of road. Much of it is unsealed but it's still a pretty smooth ride.

This picture was taken at Curio Bay, the location of a petrified forest which is visible at low tide.
